Why Pet Oral Care Is Important

Your Pet’s Oral Health

The tongue, gums, and teeth are all included in your pet’s oral wellness. Just like humans, the mouth of your pet is the gateway to their body and the perfect place for bacteria to multiply. This bacteria causes plaque and tartar to build up on their teeth, which can lead to more serious problems throughout the body. Preventive dental care is the best way to get ahead of dental issues before they worsen.

Brush Your Pet’s Teeth

Having a toothbrush move around their mouth is extremely foreign to your pet. When you begin brushing their teeth, try using a chicken or beef flavored toothpaste and introduce it to them slowly. Let them taste it and give them a small reward. Continue to do this until they feel completely comfortable with it. Next, you may begin placing a small amount on a finger brush or pet-specific toothbrush. Don’t force the brushing upon them, and gradually increase the amount of time spent brushing. Consistency is key, so brush as often as you can—preferably once per day.

Schedule Their Routine Exams

During your pet’s yearly checkup, your veterinarian should be performing a thorough examination of their oral cavity. During this visit, be sure to ask your vet if there are any areas you can improve on. Additionally, ask your vet if they provide professional cleanings. This can be especially helpful for anxious pets who don’t allow you to brush regularly at home. Your pet isn’t the only one who needs to attend their routine cleanings and exams.
